How to apply for an Auckland Council local board grant
This is not one fund. It is 21 local board programmes sharing one online form, and each board sets its own priorities, minimums and dates. Pick the right board first, because council cannot move your application to another board.
- Funder
- Auckland Council, through its 21 local boards
- Grant size
- Set by each board. Quick response grants are mostly up to $2,000. Local grants are mostly over $2,000.
- Next local grant close
- Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Grants Round Two closes 13 November 2026
- Coming rounds
- Waiheke: 30 November 2026 to 15 January 2027. Ōtara-Papatoetoe and Upper Harbour: 7 December 2026 to 5 February 2027. Howick: 4 January to 12 February 2027. Manurewa and Ōrākei: 11 January to 19 February 2027. Māngere-Ōtāhuhu: 11 January to 20 February 2027.
- Form length
- 86 questions on the standard form. Some quick response rounds add extra questions.
- Quotes
- A quote or evidence of cost for every item
Who can apply
- Incorporated societies, charitable trusts, registered charities, schools and Māori trusts.
- Limited liability companies can pick that option on the form, but some boards say no. Kaipātiki will not fund them. Albert-Eden, Ōrākei, Waitematā and Waiheke rank commercial entities lower.
- Informal groups with no legal structure are capped at $1,000, unless an umbrella organisation receives the grant for them.
What it funds
- Community projects, programmes and events in your local board area.
- Equipment, venue hire, advertising, and facilitator or employee wages, backed by quotes.
- Environment, planting and heritage projects, with extra evidence.
Documents to have ready
- Proof of your bank account, less than 90 days old.
- Financial statements or annual report from your most recent financial year.
- Minutes, or a letter from an officeholder, authorising the application.
- A quote or evidence of cost for every item.
- Landowner approval, a lease or proof of ownership if you are working on land.
- Your council lease, for any building works or maintenance.
- A letter from each school or early childhood provider you will work with.
- If using an umbrella: their approval letter and their bank account proof.
Mistakes that cost you a round
- The wrong board. Apply to the board where the activity happens. Applications cannot be transferred.
- Weak quotes. Council says having no quotes makes you less likely to be funded, and some boards give those applications a lower priority.
- A 100% grant budget. Council says a grant should not be your main funding source. Show your own contribution or other income.
- Starting too early. A project date before the board's published start date can reduce or void the grant.
- Old reports. Outstanding accountability reports from an earlier grant can stop you being funded.
- Late by a minute. Most rounds close at 10:00pm, but check your round page, because Upper Harbour's next local grant round closes at 8:00pm. Late applications are not accepted.
After you submit
Council aims to decide within four to six weeks for quick response grants and up to two months for local grants. If approved, you report back within 60 days of finishing the activity, with paid invoices and receipts.
Can you pay someone to help?
You can get help preparing it. Your organisation is still the applicant. An authorised person reviews it, signs the declaration and submits it under your own SmartyGrants login. Never pay anyone a share of the grant.
